Partnerships To Control Striga

Commercial release of Striga-resistant maize

and Synthesis Workshop

13 to 15 December 2006; Gulf Stream Hotel, Kisumu, Kenya

Striga Home: http://www.africancrops.net/striga

---------------------------------------------------------------------

News Home | Event Program

The Partnership will be conducting a 3-day Data Synthesis Symposium that will also coincide with the commercial release of Striga-resistant maize, locally known as Ua Kayongo, by the Western Seed Company in Kisumu City, Kenya. Over 100 participants from government ministries, NGOs, agro-dealers, farmers’ organizations, national and international research centres will review the performance of the field tests, farm trials and awareness activities involving Ua Kayongo maize. These activities that have been going on in Kenya for the last two years are geared at promoting Striga eradication options for small scale farmers in western Kenya. The event will also feature exhibitions and live demonstrations of various technologies for Striga eradication. A field excursion to some of the farm growing Ua Kayongo maize will be conducted on the last day of the meeting. The local and international media have been invited to cover and report the event. Inquiries can be directed to Canon Savala (FORMAT, email: format@wananchi.com) or Nancy Muchiri (AATF, email: n.muchiri@aatf-africa.org). Descriptions and performance of the Striga-resistant maize in Kenya is available at http://www.africancrops.net/striga.
