Project Description

Background and objectives

Following the release of three upland rice varieties in Uganda some three years ago, the demand for rice growing has tremendously increased. Credit goes to various partners for the effort put in to popularize and disseminate the varieties.  It is common to find rice fields side by side with crops like maize, bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes etc. Rice growing being a new culture to many and upland rice in particular, a lot of farmers are going in for it with little knowledge about its growth requirements, crop management practices let alone post harvest aspects. The objective of the project was twofold

(i) identify new superior upland rice varieties

(ii) identify suitable and appropriate upland rice crop management practices for use by farmers.

On-going activities:

  • New varieties being evaluated with participation of farmers

  • Seed rate studies on going

  • Optimal fertilizer rates being determined

  • Training of farmers the recommended crop management practices
