Project Activities

Work Plan

The following activities are planned for the present and year 2006:

  • Planting the best performing OPVs and inbred lines for seed increase in December 2005

  • Harvesting of test crosses in January

  • Evaluating the three-way hybrids in selected locations during the main cropping season

  • Culturing and making GLS inoculations to inbred lines in the screen house

  • The best performing OPVs will be evaluated in several locations. The locations will include Selian, Madiira, Arusha Foundation Seed Farm, Karatu, Weruweru, Maruku (Bukoba) and Tumbi (all in intermediate altitude areas) and Mbulu and Lushoto (both in High altitude areas)

  • Best performing lines from 2005 tested material will be crossed with selected testers

  • Best performing populations will be increased and lines will be extracted from them by selfing.

  • Top crosses will be made between selected OPVs.

  • 20-30 best performing lines will be used to make synthetics (balanced bulk population)

  • Report writing

It is hoped that at the end of the third year, potential material for release and/or near release would have been developed and/or identified.
