Project Outputs

1. Training of biotechnology communicators

The programme has developed a core group of biotechnology communicators. These individuals are conducting biotechnology awareness workshops in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia and Mozambique. The workshops are aimed at decision-makers, consumers and the media.

2. Development of common biotechnology message for the region

One of the key achievements of the programme has been to develop a common message for biotechnology stakeholders in the region. This has been done by putting together a regional core team that has worked together to produce materials that are then adapted to meet local requirements.

3. Development of Training Handbook

It has been suggested by the participants that the teams develop a common trainers manual.  This manual will then be used for all the countries in order to develop a common biotechnology message for the region.  To ensure that the manual is comprehensive, input will also be sought from other biotechnology information sources including ISAAA and IFIC.  This manual will be widely distributed and will be in an easily adaptable format for other regions of Africa.  It will also be translated into Portuguese for the Mozambique programme

4. Development of databases

One of the key objectives of the project is the development of country specific databases on those individuals and organisations equipped to deal with media and public enquiries about biotechnology. Each country will develop its own database of key media and decision-makers that will be incorporated into a regional database that will be placed on the Internet.
