Workshop Objectives

  1. Exchange and compare the diversity of experiences on participatory plant breeding (PPB) and dynamic biodiversity enhancement from Eastern, Central, Western and Southern Africa

  2. Encourage a dialogue between professionals (scientists, development workers)  and farmers (including farmer breeders) on PPB and plant genetic resource (PGR) enhancement 

  3. Identify gaps in experience of PPB and networking needed for potential second regional workshop in 2004

  4. Make current contributions to a working manual on ‘Guidelines for PPB’

  5. Identify follow-up actions to support farmer-led and formal-led PPB

  6. Identify follow-up actions to support dynamic approaches for biodiversity conservation and enhancement

  7. Sensitize institutional plant breeders on participatory approaches to crop improvement
