Rice was identified as a crop for diversification to help improve
people’s livelihood since it can contribute to addressing food security
and household income. Expansion into lowland and paddy rice was leading
to large-scale devastation of wetlands. Upland rice was therefore sought
as a better alternative. The project was therefore established to
identify suitable upland rice varieties.
