Outputs

  • Two 3-way cross hybrids  (Longe 6H, Longe 7H and Longe 8H) which are resistant to major foliar diseases and tolerant to weevils were developed and released.

  • Longe 7H has also been released in Tanzania by a local Ugandan seed company called FICA.

  • One snow white, early maturing hybrid taking 105 days and yielding 8 t/ha has been developed and under going final stages of testing

  • 147 three-way cross hybrids have been developed and tested in three east African countries (Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania). 10 of these performed exceptionally well and are to undergoing testing in the national performance trials (NPT) in the three countries

  • 84 inbred lines with good tolerance to foliar diseases and ear rots have been developed

  • Two synthetics developed which can be used for reciprocal recurrent selection, developing top crosses and extraction of lines

Impact

Once the products (varieties) from this project are released they will be taken on by different stakeholders. Through interaction with seed companies during field days and agricultural shows, some seed companies have already expressed interest in acquiring the materials. FICA seed company has gone a step forward to put two hybrids in the National Performance Trials in Tanzania.
