New OPV varieties released by
Maize Team of INIA
Dr. Miloje Denic, Maize Breeder,
INIA
Variety Releases: The
varieties released are OPV of normal maize, namely, Djandza, Chinaca,
Tsangano, and Changalane. The first three varieties, originated from
regional SADLF project coordinated by Marianne Banziger of CIMMYT,
Harare.
Selection Process:
Original drought/low N tolerant CIMMYT material was passed through four
cycles of FS recurrent selection under randomized drought/low N
conditions. Under these conditions, selection was made for earliness and
hard grain texture. Variety Changalane was reselected from INIA germplasm with
early, semi-flint, resistance to maize streak virus and downy mildew
background, originated from IITA, Ibadan. New released varieties
demonstrated superiority over existing open pollinating varieties.
Preliminary seed multiplication of foundation seed was initiated.
This work is part of INIA Rockefeller
Foundation supported project on National Maize Improvement Program. Part
of the program related to this subject, and was reported in RF organized
meeting on
Biotechnology, Breeding and Seed Systems for African Crops, November
4-7, 2002, Entebbe, Uganda
