Upcoming:
Rice Breeders Network Meeting,
21-24 April, 2008 in Kampala, Uganda
The
Program for Africa’s Seed Systems (PASS) is organizing a meeting for
breeders and private seed merchants involved in rice. This is one of the
series of meeting that PASS plans to organize for various crops to enrich
national program breeders on the best opportunities available for breeding
and delivery of seed of improved crop varieties to farmers.
Objective. The
main objective for the network meeting is to provide an interactive forum
between private and public breeders in different countries in Africa and
sharing experiences that will promote the development and access of many
more improved varieties to farmers. The meeting will also discuss
challenges faced in commercialization of rice in Africa.

What is
ECARRN?
Rice
is one of the major food crops for millions of people in Sub- Sahara
Africa. It is of significant importance in attaining food security on
Eastern and Central Africa (ECA). Rice production systems need to be
viewed in a broad framework of crop and natural resource management. With
this view that Africa Rice Cenrea (WARDA) and ASARECA have similar and
complementary interests and capabilities to collaborate in rice research
activities, the two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
in April 2004 aiming at establishing a long- term partnership for
provision of support in running of ASARECA’s Rice Research Network for
Eastern and Central Africa (ECARRN).
The
Eastern and Central Africa Rice research network (ECARRN) is one of the 17
regional networks of ASARECA, which became functional in January 2005.
ECARRN’s secretariat is hosted by the Africa Rice Centre (WARDA) and is
located at the Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute, Dar-Es-Salaam,
Tanzania.
