WEST AFRICAN CROP RESEARCH PROJECTS FUNDED BY THE MCKNIGHT FOUNDATION COLLABORATIVE CROP RESEARCH PROGRAM

A cluster of five crop research projects aimed at improving food and nutritional security in millet and sorghum based cropping systems of the West African Sahel recently received funding through The McKnight Foundation Collaborative Crop Research Program (CCRP) http://mcknight.ccrp.cornell.edu/index.html. The projects focus on the following aspects of these systems:

Grain legume/cereal intercropping: http://mcknight.ccrp.cornell.edu/projects/grain_legumes/grain_legumes_project.html

Micronutrient and nutritional sufficiency

Pest management

Sorghum and millet improvement

Farmer seed systems
http://mcknight.ccrp.cornell.edu/projects/seedsystems_waf/seed_systems_waf_project.html

The projects are led by scientists based at research institutions in the region*, but each project is a collaborative effort that involves multiple stakeholders, such as farmer, non-governmental and extension organizations. As the newly-constituted CCRP West Africa Community of Practice, the project teams will meet regularly in the coming years to share ideas, increase learning, and foster project synergies. Follow the links provided for more detailed information about the individual projects and the CCRP’s approach. (Note: CCRP only accepts proposals for funding in response to an active request for proposals (RFP)).

*Project PIs are based at Institut d’Economie Rurale (IER), Hellen Keller International, Institut National de Recherche Agronomique du Niger (INRAN) and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).
