The group discussions, emerging
issues and recommendations
Arising from the
presentation various methodological, capacity and institutional issues
emerged. The methodological issues ranged from addressing key inherent
genetical problems of the crop, to variety development and release. On
the other hand, the institutional problems ranged from harmonisation of
the variety development process to the time and number of stakeholders to
involve in the process. These broadly categorised methodological,
capacity and institutional issues were discussed further in three small
groups (Appendix 1). Within each group, issues had to be examined with
respect to output, activities and targets.
Group
deliberations were then presented in plenary and nine recommendations
made:

Create and operationalise
a Cassava Breeders Network for Eastern and Southern Africa.

Develop a standard
breeding framework within the region while, streamlining and adopting a
client demand driven participatory breeding approach.

Enhance and sustain flow
of information among cassava breeders

Harmonise cassava variety
release procedures within the region

Review and adopt
regulations on movement and exchange of cassava planting materials and
germplasm between nations

Strengthening capacity to
undertake cassava breeding in the region

Develop a cassava seed
delivery system in the region
-
Devise
mechanisms for protection of breeders rights in the region

Strengthening synergies with other partners
