Approach
All
deliberations were done and completed within two days;
18th -19th October 2005. Briefly, day one
involved oral country presentations on challenges and opportunities of
cassava breeding, and two authoritative talks which high lightened: 1) Role
of cassava breeders and the civil society towards food security and income
generation in ESA, and 2) Why breed for locally adapted cassava varieties?
These presentations were meant to stimulate thinking to identify key issues
that will constitute recommendations and the roadmap for cassava breeding in
the region. Day 2 involved a brainstorming session that culminated in
recommendations and production of a draft roadmap for the cassava breeders
network. The afternoon of day 2 involved a field visit to the National
Cassava Programme of Uganda to appraise, in the main, its breeding trials.
A total of ten
generic issues emerged, and were discussed in detail in three smaller
groups. Thereafter, group presentations were made in the plenary, from
which recommendations and roadmap were, respectively made. Herewith,
are proceedings of the deliberations.
