Duration:

Three Years

Project Outputs

  • Characterization of parent materials for Striga resistance. These sorghum cultivars are SV-1, SAR 19, SAR 29, and SAR 16. Their response to Striga infestation was determined, combining ability for Striga resistance explained, important sorghum yield components under Striga infestation identified by path coefficient analysis, and inheritance studies of low stimulant production were also conducted for cultivars SAR 19 and SAR 29.

  • A molecular linkage map consisting of RAPD and SSR markers was produced using an F2 population that was derived from the cross between SV-1 and SAR 29. This map can be saturated by scoring more markers in the segregating population. Markers that are on the present map can be potentially linked to traits of economic importance in sorghum. Linkage studies will have to be conducted to verify this.

  • Attendance to international conferences and meetings at which papers were presented. Some results from this project has been published in Scientific journals.

  • A PhD student, Charles Mutengwa, is under examination and should graduate next year. He is a direct product of this project.
