Focus is on angular leaf spot (Phaeosariopsis
griseola) and root rot diseases of beans. The two diseases are rated
important in affecting the production of this crop in the country. Some of
the major activities that have been carried out include
-
characterizing angular leaf spot
resistance genes in the cultivars Mexico 54 and BAT 332,
-
validating the utility of the
SCAR OPNO2890C and the RAPD, OPE – 04 markers linked to the
Phg-2 resistance gene in selecting resistant genotypes outside
the mapping population
-
introducing of specific
resistance genes to some of the susceptible commercial cultivars, and
-
involving farmers in variety
selection for both angular leaf spot and root rot resistance. Other
important diseases being addressed are anthracnose and common bacterial
blight. In addition to the diseases, we are also trying to address
tolerance to low soil fertility
