Project Description

MAS for Crop Improvement in Kenya (KARI Biotechnology Center)

wpe2A.jpg (355763 bytes)This photo shows several serious problems faced by maize farmers in Kenya. Among the constraints include the maize streak virus disease (already researchers are applying markers for selection), the grey leaf spot (to use markers in the near future), the northern corn leaf blight, ear rot and striga. The aim of the marker assisted selection program at the KARI biotechnology centre is to assist breeders in selecting favorable genes within a shorter time period to enhance crop improvement programs and release of new crop varieties to farmers.
