The Common Market for Eastern and Southern
Africa (COMESA) Secretariat has warned the organization's 19 member
nations of the potential risks associated with agricultural
biotechnology. While acknowledging that biotechnology has potential
benefits, COMESA's Acting Secretary General, Sindoso Ngwenya, said that
African countries must adequately address potential health and
environmental risks associated with the technology. Ngwenya said that
African publics should be educated about these risks, and he cautioned
that the adoption of genetically modified (GM) crops could prevent
COMESA member nations from exporting agricultural products to the EU.
Ngwenya made his remarks at a two-day COMESA media seminar held outside
Lusaka, Zambia. |
