Kenya Plants the First Transgenic Maize in Open Field.
Kenya has become the second African country after South Africa to plant
genetically modified maize in a protected open field. The Bt maize is
resistant to the maize stem borer and was planted on 27 May 2005 at KARI
Kiboko Research Station. These trials are conducted in strict accordance
with the terms prescribed by the Kenyan plant health regulatory body KEPHIS
and the KARI and National Biosafety Committees. More details are available

Training Opportunities
Doctoral Training in Insect Biosciences.
Applications are invited for 3-year PhD training fellowships tenable at the
International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) starting
September 2005 under the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect
Science (ARPPIS) sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD)
and the Netherlands Programme for Cooperation with International
Institutions (SII). The deadline for applications is 10 June 2005. More
